For centuries, art has elevated brands. Today, Markenkunst is the next evolutionary step: a strategic fusion of branding and art, where brands become part of the artwork itself.
Long before modern branding existed, prominent figures of the 15th century commissioned artists—not for decoration, but to express their values, tell their stories, and demonstrate their influence.
When the Medici family sponsored Botticelli’s Primavera or Michelangelo’s frescoes, they built their personal brands and created cultural monuments.
The Origins of Branded Art
In the 19th century, Pears Soap famously transformed Millais’s Bubbles into the world’s first branded fine art.
Around the same time, Moët & Chandon commissioned Alfons Mucha to create a series of posters that conveyed elegance and luxury—using art to shape perception and influence audiences.
Corporate Art Collections
Since the 20th century, global organizations like IBM, Microsoft, and Deutsche Bank have integrated art into their offices—shaping company culture and sparking inspiration across their teams.
Modern Artist Collaborations
Today, brands use art more strategically than ever. Collaborations like Louis Vuitton with Yayoi Kusama and her signature Dots show how art can create immersive, memorable brand experiences.
BMW has turned its cars into canvases through iconic Art Car collaborations with visionary artists, generating awareness and demonstrating a long-standing cultural commitment for decades.
